Employer paying Tax/NI to wrong code

Options
Hello

So for the last 18 months or so my new employer has been making my tax type payments against the wrong NI number. It was correct on my P45 but was incorrectly inputed JC instead of JG 🤔. It’s now been corrected and on the next run my payments will go against the correct number.

This has me very worried, how do I get my payments back that have been going elsewhere? Does this mean I may have been under or over paying?

Any help on how I go about straightening out would be very much appreciated.

Contact HMRC who probably have the payments stored away somewhere ready to be allocated to the correct NINO - early in the day is usually best, the lines open at 8 in theory but in practice you can usually get through a few minutes before that.

Either call them or sign up for a tax account - which would probably be the easiest & quickest option given you'll need to check your NI contributions as well as PAYE.

It's definitely worth doing, but if the deductions haven't been credited that won't be fixable through the tax account, contact with HMRC will still be required, so it may as well be done up front.

The reason I suggested the tax account is because it won't be fixable with a phonecall to hmrc either and calling hmrc to check paye & nic will require 2 phone calls - which will take probably at least 30 mins each because of the time of year. Tax account you can check both paye & nic in about 10-15 mins.

If its not on his record then his employer will need to fix it, not hmrc. Because its the employer whos sent that information.

So you didn't notice the error until 18 months later, I assume you have been getting payslips every month.
  • Thanks all I have tried calling HMRC however their lovely telephone system cuts me off as they are busy!!! Anyone know a route around this?!

Re not checking it no I haven’t checked it who does check it as in my workplace everyone also said they wouldn’t have noticed!

Other than doing as I said and calling early in the day there's not much you can do if they are busy, which at this time of year they will be due to the change of tax year. One thing that might work is calling early at the weekend, as they're unlikely to be handling many business calls then. I've found early on a Saturday to be quite a good time in the past.

Has your employer done anything other than change your NI number going forward?

HMRC will probaby require them to resubmit some of their year end information to correct the mistake. You may find that when you do eventually get hold of HMRC, they will expect the employer to correct it all.

Contact these people, they deal with the ni directly. They will arrange to move the credits over to the correct account
