The only downsides you should consider are 1. if you want to sell your property you will need bills, 2. if you have a gas leak or pressure problem with the supply.
Also the more serious downside risk of ending up in a Magistrates Court for using unregistered gas for such a long period as "3 to 5 ! " years.
.It is a crime after all and the OP has sat back for such a long time and not got past a small suppliers call centre staff who have no idea of the process of registration of a new supply.
Maybe if the OP changed his thought process from declaring " I m getting FREE gas to "unregistered " gas , it would have pushed him/her to get proper advice from someone like British Gas who own approx 40 % of the gas in the pipes and have the most to lose if someone is nt being billed properly.
. My advice is to either check with Xoserve if you are registered..If not then you can then apply to any supplier to start a new supply from day one with a new MPRN and start your payments.

I m not sure why the OP protests that "his provider " does not deal properly with his protests because he/she does not have a provider/supplier for this new connection.
Just because you get your electric from their present supplier it does` nt follow that you automatically turn to them to complete the registration process of a new gas supply. Duel fuel providers are not a given..
As a long term meter reader for British Gas I remember when everyone was supplied by separate gas/electric suppliers and the real savvy ones on here still compare and use separate gas/electric suppliers.
The duel fuel discount is pretty dismal nowadays and that is the only reason I ever had the same supplier on occasions.

Thanks for your initial advice. That was helpful. Your second post was very ignorant and came across as very pompous if you don't mind me saying. The language you use is counter productive and dismissive and too many wrong assumptions. Firstly, I'm not breaking any laws. I'm very open about it and my provider asked and told me they'd contact me the last time we spoke. Well done to you if you enjoy wasting money and time on calls and they don't frustrate you or if you like your emails ignored and unanswered. I call that horrendous service and I've been waiting on them. Part of committing certain crimes involves dishonesty. I'm not being dishonest so your insinuations could therefore be libellous. As far as I know I was given a registration for a new gas supply, they just haven't put me on a duel fuel tariff. You assume its a small supplier. Just cause you work for BG doesn't mean every one is with a small and insignificant power supplier. In fact, I find BG have the worst customer service going and that's the reason I left them so many years ago. Now it seems all companies don't seem to care about customers and just about profit. I really liked your first advice. It was so helpful but do me a favour fella and wind your neck in or everything else you say as you could easily offend, make wrong assumptions or just commit breaches of Law yourself. Thank you.
  • You won't find yourself in court, if the network did realise they would contact you first and ask you to contact an energy supplier, they would then chase you to make sure you did this.

I've seen people contact energy suppliers in this situation and the network give quite a lot of leeway in that it still took 6 months for the energy supplier to set it up.

As they say main risks are if there was a problem with your supply or if you wanted a smart meter.
  • I have a client that cannot register for a fuel
She calls up every 6 months (and records the call) to give meter readings and pay her bill- the supplier say they are not the supplier and name another supplier

She then calls the other supplier and goes through the same process who tell her she is not with them and the first supplier is.

She tells each of them what the other says and she is told she is wrong

Roll on a year or so and she does the same again

As I understand if is fraud they can go back 6 years- if it is supplier incompotence they can go back a year.

She has just over a years worth of money in a savings account ready for when things click in to place
    baldly going on...

Why would you want or need a smart meter when you are getting free gas?:)

The codes of practice cover you for not being billed, should you have a supplier and they are not sending you bill. however, should you not be making an effort to get the issue resolved they could estimate the gas usage for the full period should you have a gas supplier which can be costly.

Should it be unregistered you run the risk of the below:

Any issues with your gas meter or supply you would remain off, as no supplier would be able to help.

Don’t know about your home insurance as no gas meter inspections would be getting carried out?

On a positive note, once you have registered with someone and a new MPRN is created they would only bill you from the take over reading.

Deffo a good idea to register with someone for your peace of mind.

Just a note your elec payments are high, does your hot water or something else run on electricity?

    " The back-billing code"
Comes into play when a supplier fails to send out bills for 12 months or more - For it to be applied the customer must be able to show that that they contacted the supplier to get bills.

With this criteria met, the supplier can only bill for energy supplied in the past 12 months, and that 12 months is counted back from the day they did manage to produce a bill

Provided you have evidence that you have chased the supplier for bills, you have a choice:
    1) Sit back whilst still prodding the supplier for bills, being safe in the knowledge that when eventually a bill does come it can only charge for the last 12 months supply - Keep a monthly record of your meter readings

    2) Contact BG, explain the situation and let them sort it out, again safe in the knowledge that they can only bill you from the meter reading and date that they took over.
