Cabot - Ruthbridge Ltd

My mother received a letter from Cabot saying they were passing an unspecified debt of >£800 to Ruthbridge, shortly thereafter Ruthbridge also sent a letter saying they were chasing debt from 2006, which according to them was for a loan.
I checked my mum's credit file last year and it was all clear, and as far as I can tell she's not in any debt, however, she has dementia so I can't really confirm either way and plus when trying to get further information from Ruthbridge, they won't speak to me about her account. I can send them across my LPOA however I'm just wondering if I'm opening a can of worms so to speak? I'd appreciate any advice.

The first step would be helping your mother send a 'Prove It' letter for details about the alleged debt.
There's a nice guide here: https://debtcamel.co.uk/prove-it/
I wouldn't do anything else. Assuming she does have a debt with them but has not made payment within 6 years, the debt would be statute barred anyway - they should send you a statement which will outline if this is the case but I'd cross that bridge if you come to itKnow what you don't0 -
Thank you Exodi, very interesting I was unaware of statute barred, but yes as you suggested I'll go down the route of asking for proof, essentially it is what I need to do anyway as my mum can't remember and I doubt she has paperwork from that long ago.
