In the case of Equitable Life, the company was allowed to plod on as a zombie for over 2 decades. Holders of their with profit funds, who changed providers, have done badly. Those who stuck it out probably did ok. I hold a tiny amount (5K), which is about to get a 20% bonus. This was purely through luck as all funds were put into bonds and bonds did well over this period. All the misselling of Equitable pensions was done under the government rules at the time and the government didn’t give a penny to pension holders.

Rules change all the time; invariably they solve one problem and introduce another we don’t know about. Yet. For example if insurers moved into bonds, it could store pain for their clients as real returns from bonds could be atrocious for long periods of time.

And I do find it fascinating how Brits have 100% trust in their government and regulations. Watching the news and shaking my head. That’s probably the main difference between the two continents.

I think you'll find that people are much the same the world over. There's a vast range of opinions everywhere. Some are pessimists, some are optimists and some think of themselves as realists.

Yes, people are the same but the culture is different. I am betting that BBC TV licence inspector would not be permitted to enter most peoples homes this side of the Atlantic (and people have guns, would be a hazardous job). Before I left England, every step in any British town was already recorded by millions of cameras. That kind of scrutiny still hasn’t reached Canada; people are strongly opposed and consider it infringement of personal freedoms.

There is definitely more trust in the benevolent government and civil service in the UK and more suspicion and mistrust, stronger support for limiting government in N America.

Complete reliance on the government is particularly peculiar given the state of British politics.

My personal view is that Yes, Prime Minister is a documentary rather than a sitcom. Any government and civil service of the day will do what works for them on any given day and will happily throw out commitments they have if it suits them better.

I don't agree with the TV licence but I pay it and expect everyone else to. And I don't mind being recorded walking about town. Yes Prime Minister doesn't even come close but I'm actually quite encouraged that central government is in complete chaos here but everything still works anyway.

Having been linked to the thread in a thread of mine i looked at your summary in the OP which made total sense to me.

Trying to get straight answers IS possible but it's a bit of a sport. It's often like discussing with lawyers or politicians or something where if they answer straight they'll die. Everything has to be alluded to, it can't be said.

Still, it's a necessary game to play because there's plenty of learning needing to be done.
