Sorry, I should not have referred to partners sharing maternity leave.

I just get irritated by the assumption that if you don't employ women in their mid-20s, you won't have any employees taking up to a year off following the birth or adoption of a child: that somehow, this makes you 'safe'.

Granted, the uptake of even basic paternity leave is low, let alone longer periods, but employees have the right to share what used to be available to mothers only, and as time goes by I suspect that more and more will want to take advantage of 'different' arrangements.

Another soon-to-be-mum timing employment and pregnancy with swiss-watch-like precision to gain maximum impact.

Yes I imagine it may be enhanced maternity after two years service. If that is the case then I will wait the required time as it'll be more beneficial for us financially.

    Just the worst.

How are we supposed to do it then? Just pop one out and hope for the best? Good grief.

The other thing is don’t think it can just happen like that on a whim. There’s a column under the marriages bit on here where folk have been trying for a year or so.

    Money isn’t everything

Conversely, there are older people who think they are 'safe' and that turns out wrong. It can't be called.

All the best with your impending arrival dawyldthing. :)
