Thought I'd make an account so I can provide any info that might help, been following these threads so close for years, and have just checked my online banking and cross referenced it with the issue dates shown on HMRC repayments page and the money always clears at midnight the the working day after it says issued, so if it says issued on 20th April it will be in your bank Tuesday morning 1min past midnight hope this helps
That's good to know, it makes sense if they issue the amount on the 20th monday it should be in the account the next day. Thanks.

Not that this will be of much comfort to those still waiting but I did my self assessment and submitted it bank holiday Monday afternoon (13th) and didn't need to do any separate steps to request repayment from my tax account. I had just filled out my bank details as part of the process for an overpayment, and the money was visible on my bank account yesterday Thurs 16th.

It's only a few months since my last return - as for 18/19 I owed them money, so left it as late as possible, whereas this year they owed me five grand, so I did it nice and early... I'm not self employed just PAYE, so the refund just related to pension/ vct/ eis/ charity compared to my tax code.

I don't have my final P11D and couldn't be bothered to do all my CGT calc while waiting for my (nothing to pay there) so I just used a generous guesstimate of P11D numbers with a note to say they were estimates, and at some point later this year I'll submit the proper one and get a little bit more cash back. Absolutely no complaints here about the speed with which they paid me out !
Is the money available or is it just showing as pending?
Available in my bank account since yesterday as a balance rather than as pending, and when looking at the online transaction list and online printable statement today, it was datestamped yesterday 16th.

Actually something I hadn't noticed previously, transaction type for the credit in my account is showing as a 'DEB' (debit card transaction) with the last 4 digits of my debit card number next to it, rather than an incoming 'bank giro credit' or similar. I wonder if they have simply performed a partial refund of the transaction when I gave them a large payment in January for my 2018/19 tax? That transaction was paid by me using that debit card, linked to this current account.

On my tax return for 2019/20 that I was doing on Monday I did enter my proper sort code and account number in the relevant fields for how to pay me any overpayment (and not any debit card details). I didn't notice on Thursday how they paid me, just that they had paid me. Perhaps they have already validated in the past that those debit card details are how my personal tax bill got paid, and as the debit card is in my name and still has a few months left before it expires, maybe it is cheaper or quicker to just send money back through it, rather than arranging a BACS or similar.
It is normal for card payments.

Although filing your 2019:20 return would not normally prompt a refund of tax paid for 2018:19.  Did you mean payment for 2019:20 payment on account?
Basically, following my self assessment for 2018/19 I owed them a chunk of money, which I paid them on submitting my 18/19 return in January 2020, clearing my tax account by debit card. I'm just a salaried employee and don't do payments on account, but had some 18/19 capital gains etc, so I owed them - and left the payment for that until reasonably close to the deadline.

Then for 2019/20, I submitted a self assessment last Monday for the tax year just ended, and they owed me £5k or so due to my overpayment of 2019/20 tax through PAYE - given I had more pension, charity, EIS/,VCT than had been built into my tax code.

Based on your link, it seems that because they have my debit card details from when I paid off my tax account with a £10x payment a few months back, they decided that now my 2019/20 self assessment shows they owe me £x, and the x is lower than the 10x I'd paid them via debit card, they are just going to send me the £x that they owe me by doing a partial refund of my £10x debit card transaction from a few months back.

Effectively I paid off my tax account (which was a balance from my 18/19 SA return) and now there is a balance on my tax account from my 19/20 SA return in the opposite direction, so they are going to settle it by partially refunding my last card payment instead of by using the bank details I'd given them as part of the 19/20 SA process.

I had assumed I would have to wait a while for human processing and a bank transfer, so was very pleasantly surprised that I had cleared funds available in my bank on Thursday 16th given the first business day after the bank holiday on which I submitted my 19/20 return was Tuesday 14th.

In the initial moments after finishing the return, my tax account was zero and didn't show the money they owed me, which made sense given it had said it could take 48 or 72 hours or whatever to process the return. But before I even got around to checking the tax account to see if it was all accepted and wonder how long it would take to get paid out, I realised I already had the money in my bank!

Thanks for the link, which seems to explain how they will make the payment in those circumstances, which certainly suits me. As it happens, the debit card is linked to the same current account that I had put on my 19/20 return, I suppose it could have been annoying if I had deliberately wanted it paid elsewhere.
  • Filed my self assessment on the 6th apr, clicked for repayment on the 7th and today changed from pending to repayment 20th apr........... so payment will go into bank account Tuesday 😀

Quote me if I need to post this somewhere else.

Is anybody else claiming universal credit. Will the sa refund affect it. Iv read conflicting articles. Some say sa refund doesn't update in the real time earnings system. Others say it does. Any info would be great.
You do have to report it to universal credit, BUT you put it down as ‘income from another source’ as it’s not taxable and also put it down as a yearly amount as you receive the refund once a year. 100% you have to report it, it’s documented in your agreement and so I asked my advisor and he said you have to report it.
