Mortgage application rejected, default on store card

Options
Wonder if anyone could please help?

I had a Dorothy Perkins card several years ago, which was only used as and when. Having cleared off the balance, I moved house then several years later an old neighbour brought round mail from my former home. There were letters from New Day (credit card company) and their law firm with a default payment (I didnt know I had payment protection, and this had accrued) and late fees etc.totally £180. Despite me changing my personal information with New Day when i moved, all of the correspondence kept going to my old address, so I wasn't aware of any of this. This was all finally settled some 5 years ago and paid off in full.

Fast forward to the present day. Ive just had a mortgage application rejected because of this. I've been advised by my mortgage company to contact the law firm involved and New Day to remove the default from my account.

I'm literally meeting the property developer to chose integrated appliances tomorrow. Any idea of the chances of this being removed from my credit history? Its the ONLY thing thats stopping the mortgage. Everything else is fine.

Please help :(

  • Is it a purchase or a remortgage?

If a purchase you may want to find a lender who is happy to accept your default as it is likely to take a long time to argue with the companies to get the default removed, with no guarantee of success.

Even if removed it may take a month or two for the credit filles to update.

You need to ask yourself if you have all that time.

Is the vendor going to wait for it or will they find some other buyer who can proceed quicker?

It sounds like you have grounds to get it removed, but it will not happen overnight.

It might be quicker to find a new lender where you do fit criteria. A default from over 5 years ago and satisfied should be possible to place on the high street.
