Perhaps ‘WhatsApp’ has somehow associated itself with my wife’s iphone 4s and my son’s mobile phone number in the few hours that he was using it?...and the whole thing has got its knickers in a twist now that my wifes original sim-card has been re-inserted.
Could it be something to do with that?...I’m on very unsure ground and clutching at straws tbh.
Unless you son opened WhatsApp on the phone it’s unlikely, but even if that did happen you should just be getting a message to reauthorise the number.====0 -

I’ll ask my son to come back round and we’ll try his sim-card back in my wife’s phone,...just to see what happens,... and take it from there.
I’m completely out of ideas apart from that;...I’d rather not do a factory re-set just atm.0 -
Is it possible that the 4S does not support the latest version (2.19.40) of WhatsApp? Is there a source where the OP can download version 2.19.31? We know that worked, so has to be worth a try before doing a factory restore.
In theory, any iPhone running IOS 8.0 or later should be fine.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

It should be ok, the latest version will work from iOS 8 and the OP has iOS 9.WhatsApp for iPhone requires iOS 8 or later. On iOS 7.1.2, you can no longer create new accounts or reverify existing accounts. If WhatsApp is currently active on your iOS 7.1.2 device, you will be able to use it until February 1, 2020. iOS 6 and older are no longer supported.====0 -

I'm stumped atm ..would a full reset be advisable?...what are the implications?
P.S. The version of WhatsApp that it’s downloading is 2.19.40 App Size: 81.4MB
The version that was on before the problem was 2.19.31 App Size 80.7MB
Absolutely no joy with WhatsApp since Tuesday,...until today.
The WhatsApp version that I was previously downloading: 2.19.40;...however, in the last day or so it’s been upgraded to version 2.19.41,...and this new version works perfectly I’m relieved to say.
I was asked to enter/verify the mobile number and WhatsApp sprung into life as per normal.
Many thanks for all the help/advice.:)0 -
Read the thread and glad it's working now! Must've been an issue with the version previously downloaded that was now fixed.0
