Being paid less than other work colleagues for same position

I've been working at a nursing home for just over two years having moved on from working in retail for 17 years. I started as a day care assistant then in June 2018 got promoted to a Senior care position. My wages went from £8 to £8.30.

I'm one of six senior carers at the nursing home, I was already aware of one senior being on £8.60, one senior carer is leaving at the end of April. The job was advertised at £8.65, they are also advertising care assistants day and night at £8.30.

My question is how can this be fair, and what is the point in having added responsibility for no extra money.

I don't think any of my work colleagues are on the same wages. Some will earn a few thousand more a year than others for doing exactly the same job. Our wage increases are influenced by meeting targets and good negotiations. As long as there is no discrimination in the protected characteristics and you make more than national minimum wage your employers are not breaking any laws.

Can you not ask for a pay rise? If you were to threaten to leave would they pay a bit more to keep you?
  • My only explanation I can think of is being at a lower level of nvq and having less experience. Min wage for 25+ goes to £8.21, the other carers would be going from £8 to £8.30 inline with what's advertised for that role.

But the fact I'm at a supervisor level for the same wage as a non supervisor doesn't make any sense. I'm planning on speaking to management when I go back to work Tuesday. I worked over the weekend but the home doesn't normally have management working on a weekend
  • Companies don't have to recognise experience is the new wave of thinking. I was told me and my colleagues no matter our age or experience are on same wage (for our apparent 'skilled' hotel role, it also got said; a skilled job means something else entirely to me)

Don't get me wrong I hate it, it means I have two overly powerful 20 year olds who strongly act as as if their are my manager too because there is absolutely that boundary lost. When I was 20 I was earning less then £4.20 and wouldn't have comprehended knowing how to show anyone up in the workplace.

Trying to see the other bright side, the company I'm about to go temp for can offer mature candidates a real apprenticeship for the same money as they pay their temps.

All you can do is speak to management about it. It's very common for people with similar experience to come in on a higher wage than current staff. It's often the only way to attract new people.
Bottom line though is that you can't force your employer to pay you more and it may be necessary to move to get more money.

Or ask about applying for the job at £8.65.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

My daughter works in care, and her employer pays more to the staff who have a higher level NVQ. She has recently completed and passed her level 3, and was put onto a higher wage immediately. She has almost ten years experience.
  • theoretica they already filled the position by promoting a care assistant, what's iterated me more in the principal.
Tomorrow I'm to have a new care assistant shadow me for the shift, he will be on the same wage I'm on.

Discuss a pay uplift with your employer or start firing off job applications.

So what did management say when you discussed this with them yesterday?.

If you haven't spoken to them then you can't really complain or getting annoyed until you do. No employer is going to pay more than they need to so if your quiet and accept the money they won't randomly give you a pay rise.
