Marriage allowance

Any issues applying online? Im 100% eligible, but when my wife applies online it says we are not eligible. We claimed it the previous year but then applied to cancel it as my wife found a job that would of moved her income above the tax free amount. However this did not work out. So we was told that the marriage allowance would continue but we would have to re apply after the tax year ends. The marriage allowance is showing as 'canceled' on both our tax accounts. My tax account offers the option to remove it, but it warns that it will remove it for all the years i have received it. Which also means i could have to repay it. When we apply online it says we are not eligible as our date of marriage does not meet the criteria. (08/12/2012).

  • It sounds like your wife (as the applicant) really needs to phone HMRC to get to the bottom of this.

Before doing that though you need to be certain in your own minds which tax year(s) you want Marriage Allowance in place. It is easy to confuse things with Marriage Allowance!

If your wife cancelled the application during 2018:19 then I thought you would both be back to normal from today onwards.

Have you both checked your 2019:20 tax codes on your Personal Tax Account?

Are you by any chance trying to apply for this (rather than marriage allowance)?

I'm a bit confused in relation to the effect on tax banding from the marriage allowance transfer.
To take 2018/19 as the example, the personal allowance is £11850 so including the MA goes up to £13040. Does that also increase the higher rate by the same amount from £46350 to £47654.
I mention this because the HMRC online self assessment system cannot cope with the MA and as soon as I put the figures in, it says I owe tax.
  • The recipient of Marriage Allowance is not entitled to any additional Personal Allowance.

They are entitled to a £238 deduction from their tax liability (in 2018:19).

Applying for marriage allowance. Have been in receipt of it up until april 2019. Half through last tax year we asked to have it cancelled (change of jobs and income etc). However we are applying for 2019/2020 as my wifes income is still below the tax threshold. Obviously born after 1935 and married in 2012. But for some reason it refused to work online. Just says that our date of marriage does not meet the criteria. However when we use the eligibility calculator it shows that we are allowed it. Originally applied for it in 2017 and was back dated. Up to date on every year. I know its not a great deal of money but its still something to get back.

Sounds like you are claiming Married Couples Allowance rather than Marriage Allowance.

Check what you have entered on the return.

Let's look at 2019/20. My income is £50000 and I get MA which means the first (£12500*1.1=) £13750 is tax free. I get that. So I log into my tax account on the HMRC site and give them my estimated income for this year as £50000 and they estimate tax as (£50000-£13750 = ) £7250. I get that as well. However, it then says "you can earn £1250 more before your income reaches the next tax band". That, to me, implies that the upper tax band is increased by £1250 to £51250, which was my original question.

Definitely going through the marriage allowance link. Could be a website fault.

What you write could suggest that (a part of) HMRC has decided to re-write their MAT procedure to - at last - be (more) compliant with the legislation.

    Heaven help us all.
