Comfortable Pension for a Single Person

It’s been a few years since I checked this thread. I’m currently still working full time with the aim of becoming ‘mortgage neutral’, or rather getting to a point where if I lost my job I could use a pension lump sum to clear the outstanding balance.
However, I’d prefer to continue working and reassess in a couple of years when I’m 60. My two children still live at home but I would expect them to leave within next couple of years. Then the decision is whether to keep eating away at the mortgage on the house I’m in now (3-bed), or downsize and clear the debt that way.
This house is lovely but needs a fair bit doing (kitchen and bathroom are functional but quite old). Not sure I want to spend my meagre pension on big DIY projects …Single mum since 2007.2
