The very nice people at Ubuntu will send you Ubuntu Linux CDs at no charge, for you to install and share. They even pay the cost of shipping as well. You get both an Install CD and a LiveCD. The LiveCD allows you to try Linux without installing it on your computer.

have a look at this post
A live cd is useful if your windows ever fails
You're running an alternative operating system from your cd drive
I have Knoppix (my post here)and if ever windows stops working, I can use the internet and access all my files by putting the knoppix disc in my drive0 -
I've been tempted a couple of times with the Linux based OS's, but never really plucked up the courage. How does it work as far as Windows software is concerned? Can I use any software that I currently use on XP, or it a matter of pot luck as to whether there is some sort of patch? What are the advantages over XP?0

I've got a CD called Knoppix which you boot the PC on, it installs Linux from the disk and does not install it on your hard disk.It comes with browsers and open office which will open Microsoft documents etc and a CD burner. As it boots it auto detects your modem sound card etc and lets you access the internet straight away so if you want a taster of Linux but are frightened to intall then give it a go !!
if you like it then there is an install function on the disk
One of the major advantages is the greatly reduced chance of picking up viruses. In an emergency it also gives you access to important stuff on your hard disk if Windows won't boot up !Ex forum ambassador

Thanks for that - I've spent the last couple of days trying to check out the various types of linux out there (and boy, there are lots!!). I had just finished downloading and burning a copy of Knoppix, although haven't tried it yet. Linux does seem ideal for the office/home business pc, but how about games? I use Excel and Word quite a lot, but equally play quite a lot of games (not really high end stuff) - will these all work easily (or at all!) with any or all versions of Linux do you know?
The thing that has put me off a bit is that a lot of the versions seem to require use of a CLI - which I used to use back in the days of dos (blimey, doesn't that make me feel old!!), but I don't really want to go back to it unless I have to.
