Dentists and denusomab

I am having monthly injections of this drug, and have been told that it might cause dental difficulties down the line. I am scared enough about seeing the dentist, but what sort of problems can I expect? My oral hygiene is good and I don't need any dental work other than the regular inspection, but this is putting me off even going for that.

The problems that can happen only occur on major dental work - like having teeth out or actual bone surgery (eg for implants). The side effects that can be caused are quite nasty problems with the bone healing after a tooth/ teeth have been taken out or other surgery.
Minor stuff won't cause a problem.
Your dentist will be aware of the warnings (Probably more so than some nursing staff giving the advice!) So just be sure to make your dentist aware of the treatment you're receiving.
Make sure you still keep your regular check-ups and hygiene appointments so that you will do your best to keep your teeth healthy and avoid having to have teeth out.
It's good that hospitals are finally warning patients that some of these drugs can cause problems - so teeth should be sorted out and made healthy before courses of the drugs start. But sometimes, they aren't really aware of the actual problems - and the vague advice given can put people off continuing with the routine care that will help avoid the complications in the first place. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Excellent post Toothsmith.
I have six monthly denosumab injections.
I was given a one page sheet at the hospital about the drug which referred to potential rare jaw and bone trouble and the need for dental check ups and have done a bit more research since then.
My dentist is fully aware of denosumab and is very supportive. I asked for six monthly dental check ups, and this she is happy to do, although I don't have many teeth left, (due to age and not due to denosumab)!
I want to keep the teeth that I have and avoid any possible problems while having this drug and my dentist checks that my teeth are firmly anchored in and also checks oral hygiene. Only in the surgery for 5 to 10 minutes and it's painless and gives me peace of mind and is 10 minutes well spent!0
