Late mothers state pension refund

Hello, my mother died March 2018 and I tidied up all the loose ends with her accounts and benefits she received.

I have since received a letter from HMRC stating that she is due a pension refund, it didn’t say any more apart from asking for my details as the executor and next of kin. I am confused because I thought the state pension dies with the person claiming. She was 75 at the time of death.

I know I can wait until they respond back to me, but I just wondered if anyone as any ideas what this could be?

Not sure if State Pension is paid in arrears, but if so, perhaps her last payment didn't actually cover all the days right up until her passing.
  • Something sounds wrong here.

DWP administer the State Pension not HMRC.

Be wary before giving too much personal information away.

I agree with Dazed and Confused - anything to do with State Pension would come from The Pension Service (part of DWP), not HMRC.

Did she have any other pensions ?

HMRC might be involved if she had other private pensions that were having tax deducted - as she won't have had a full years state pension it may be that her estate is entitled to a refund of some tax deducted from her private pension.

Did she also have a private pension? If so it could be possible a tax rebate is due.

SP paid 4-weekly is in arrears. Weekly SP is in advance.

I was going to say be aware of scams but I’m not aware of any that happen by snail mail.

this sounds like a tax refund if it’s form hmrc.

Perhaps (guess) she’s been taxed assuming she’d receive income for the entire tax year and is now due a refund?
