I think mailto: works

So you put it in as a link (as normal ie click the link button) and add mailto: to the beginning ie :

    mailto:test@tester.com

    like this : test@tester.com

Then to add a subject add ?subject=Hello PRWilson

So the link would become :

    mailto:test@tester.com?subject=Hello PRWilson

    Like this :

    test@tester.com

You can then remove the mailto: bit from the actual link that gets shown to keep it tidy, so when you add your link it should appear something like this :

    [U RL="mailto:test@tester.com?subject=Hello PRWilson"]mailto:test@tester.com?subject=Hello PRWilson

(Space in U RL is just so that it renders it here so you can see it, shouldn't be a space in your actual code)

The red text is what actually appears on the forum that people click on, so it doesn't matter what it says in here, so you can just go ahead and remove all the bumff so it just says test@tester.com (or whatever).

    ie :

    [U RL="mailto:test@tester.com?subject=Hello PRWilson"]test@tester.com

(Remember to remove the http:// that comes up automatically when you click the link button.)

You should use %20 where you want a space eg.

    mailto:test@tester.com?subject=Hello%20PRWilson

and remember it is a URL link not an EMAIL link.

Unfortunately, it does not work for everybody on MSE - only for those who have set up a default email system on their device (and many people use a different email when comping). Those who "copy email address" get the subject in the address field and this causes more hassle. It has been tried several times over the years and has always caused problems.

I advise you not to use it on MSE

Agreed, it will have it's drawbacks, but email clients are a lot smarter than they used to be, I know with Hotmail/Outlook on Windows 10 it does now automatically open up the Outlook program whether it's set as the default or not ... not sure if it prompts you to open the link in Gmail or whatever your email client is if you're not using Windows / Outlook.

Also, if you're gonna copy the email address to just paste it into your client, you would just select the text, right click and select copy ... that won't take the subject field because you're just copying what appears on the page, which will be fine if the bumff is removed ... it only becomes a problem when people select "Copy email address".
