no, it hasn't been mentioned at all - there was no application form (just a CV through a job board) & no mention of it up to now.
I think good practice on their part would be to explain the need for a standard DBS check but that hasn't happened so i do think my best bet is just to wait and see

DBS checks are recommended even if not a controlled function. I am doing one for a trainee broker at the minute.

I would probably take a view on it.

I am not a fan of drugs personally, but having grown up in a pub I realise that the majority of people who go out at the weekend do one drug or another. There is nothing to say your future employer can not take you on so it would be down to them and their policies.

i completely understand that they're recommended but I'm not sure the employer is entitled to ask for a standard check unless there is a specific requirement for it for that particular role is there?
If it's just a basic check I think it only shows unspent convictions so a caution wouldn't be on there
  • Either way though, I don't think there is a legal obligation to show on a job advert, job description or personal specification that a DBS check is going to be varied out, but I could be wrong?

You have not done anything wrong, because if you are not asked, you are not obliged to tell them.

Obviously if a standard check is done then it will come to light, but they cant say well you never told us as they never asked you.

If a standard check is not appropriate for the job role you have applied for the DBS people would just refuse to carry it out.

A basic one could then be done but as already mentioned by another poster anything unspent wouldn't show up anyway.

They need to confirm to the DBS provider that you have agreed to the check being carried out. Some of the data requested will have to be obtained from you any way as it is unlikely to have been included on a standard application form (like addresses for the past 5 years).
  • I was in the exact same situation when I applied for my current job. I had a caution 4 years ago (for being drunk and disorderly) and the standard DBS check went through fine.

They emailed today to tell me it hasn't come back clear and for me to disclose what's on there and forward them the certificate.
I'm still not certain why they've asked for the standard check but now they know something's there i guess it'll just be for them to decide how much of a dealbreaker it is

Do make sure that you ask to speak to whoever is responsible for DBS checks: this should be a fairly tightly controlled function rather than the entire office being privy to the results.

I'd start by saying that you were not asked to disclose earlier in the application process, or naturally you would have done. Then move onto what and the circumstances, nothing similar since, learned your lesson etc etc etc. And also if it hasn't been a barrier to your professional membership, mention that too.

    Hope it goes well!
