Quick P45 Question

Hi, I starting a second job next week which is on an ad-hoc basis to supplement my current p/t job.

They have emailed me to remind me to bring my bank details as well as my P45. I don't have this as I've not left my current job.

Do I need to take anything else instead. Just been looking online and reading about start forms if you don't have a P45. Should I fill in and print off one of these?

Thanks

  • How much do you earn in the PT job?

There's a decent chance your secondary income will be BR anyway, so no rush to fill out a new starter form

I earn just under 10K. Sorry, what does BR stand for? Just wundered if I needed to take anything in place of a P45? :)

BR = Basic Rate i.e. 20% in England and Wales, %21 in Scotland.

BR is Basic Rate i.e. all of that income is taxed at 20% (on current rates, and excluding Scotland). It's probably worth taking in your latest payslip, your employer should ask you to complete a new starter form and it might help you to fill it in (you wouldn't need to show it to them).

Does each employer know about the other? Many require you to tell them if you have other work. Permission shouldn't be unreasonably withheld, but they won't be happy if you're working for a competitor, or if what you do in one job is likely to affect your performance in the other.

Well according to the Scottish government website basic rate of tax is still 20% in Scotland.

They do have a starter rate (19%) and an intermediate rate (21%) as well before the higher and additional rates kick in but definitely still 20% through the the UK.
