Experian reference check

Has anyone had an experian reference check? I have been offered a good job but find it nerve wracking that references are not taken up prior to employment but once you are in post. HR confirmed that this was the process and they use experian..does anyone have experience and can advise what happens? My main issue is how far back do these checks go as I genuinely do not recall exact months / years of employment years back so have essentially guessed and am worried that if the checks go far back there will be a mismatch between what is on my cv and what the check returns. I'm really worried so any advice is really very much appreciated. Thank you

Experian checks are for finances. Are you applying for a financial position?

Do you mean, like, you wrote you finished a job in June 2008 but it might actually have been September 2008 etc?

If so, I think you'll probably be okay :rotfl:

They are just going to pull your main references, probably do a credit check (as it's experian), check your degrees aren't fake etc.

Also, minor inaccuracies would probably be tolerated if they obviously weren't deliberate attempts to mislead.

Experian have been branching out, they now offer to do lazy HR department's referencing for them https://www.experian.co.uk/background-checking/reference-checks.html

Yes they now do reference checks...have heard they go back years and I have no idea about dates that far back so have guessed (on years rather than months!)

Really? It would be interesting to know where they get the data from. Or are they just confirming the data on your CV as any employer can do anyway?

Yep, looks like the do referencing, credit, ID and CRB checks. Most of which, of course, any employer can do anyway.

In reality it's just a service anyone can offer.


Experian cannot share all the date they hold with the employer anyway; only sections of it

Its basically a way for companies to outsource checks to another company.

A few weeks/amonth out here and there is not going to be an issue. They'd be worried if you had big unexplained gaps in your references that your CV didn't mention, or you claimed you worked for someone that actually you didn't. That kind of thing. Don't worry. Congratulations on the new job.
