Council Tax Payments

Hi all, just a quick one. Does anyone know whether you can reduce monthly Council Tax payment amounts by making a partial lump sum payment.

I.e if Council Tax is £150 per month, £1500 per year, could I for example pay a lump sum of £500 to bring my total owed to £1000 and therefore my monthly payments to £100?

Thanks

Easiest thing would be to ask your council.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

and if they say no, ask if they will allow you to pay 12 monthly payments. Many do.

Or stick the lump sum in a 5%-paying bank account.

If you pay a lump sum then you'd need to ask the council to adjust the remaining instalments otherwise you run the risk of a reminder notice being issued.

If you're in England, and haven't lost the right to pay by instalments, then the council cannot refuse the change to 12 monthly instalments.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

If you have the £500 available in April why can't you just leave it in your account for the next 10 months and have £50 taken off it with each payment? I can't really see why you would want to pay the £500 up front.
