Has your mother been contacted by the Pensions Service?

    Sorry, I understand.
She hasn't been contacted by them as yet but I imagine that will be shorty. The RAF pension is a widow's pension and she currently gets a widow's pension from the HMRC, which she's had the past 29 years. It's around £215 a fortnight but I'm assuming the state pension will replace this?

Also, i think the state pension counts as income on top of her earnings, so how much should I put in this tax year?

    Thanks

No, pension income (although taxable income) does not count as relevant earnings for pension purposes.

If an individual's only income were pension income, the maximum
he could contribute to a pension (net) would be £2880 - the personal pension provider would claim tax relief of £720 and add it to the pot.

With regard to your mother's widow's pension, the DWP will sort out the changeover to state pension when she reaches her state pension age.

I am surprised that she has not been contacted already as she reaches SPA in May(?).

It might be a good idea for her to contact the Pension Service some time next week to clarify her position.

See post 18 for contact details.
  • It’s actually July, I thought it was earlier but didn’t want to confuse things by updating it so I’m sure will hear something in the next month. I really appreciate your help.
