I’ve got an Australian colleague’s daughter who’s 20 and will be basing herself with me for 3 months this summer as part of some travelling.

It would be good/practical if she could use my address (with my full consent!) as her official ‘place of residence’. Anyone have any idea how I can do this? Things like being able to get a library card etc
Thanks

Add her name to a utility bill then remove it once you’ve got the bill through with her name on. Do it now & you should have one through by summer. A friend did this for one of their visiting friends. Worked perfectly.

Is the OP's friends daughter on a tourist visa? If this is so, isn't pretending to the authorities that she is a resident illegal?

Thanks both.... I can assure you nothing dodgy is going on as a if it was I wouldn’t be involved. I obviously don’t want to go into too much detail but she has a British passport as her mother is English. This is purely a practical thing.

I can’t add her to my utility bill as British Gas will only allow 1 name on the account!

    Any other ideas?

    Hi,

When we have had au pairs in the past I have just gone to the library with them and explained the situation, I think cards were issued as an extension to our family with me as guarantor.
Your friend will probably need to register with your GP anyway and then , if I remember correctly, will be sent a medical card which is proof of address.

Your username suggests you are single so won't she need to be added to the council tax while resident ? Unless she is a student ?

It depends whether or not the property is her 'sole or main residence' or not for the period in time. The 'sole or main residence' could remain outside of the country, depending on the circumstances, in which case she would not be regarded as resident for council tax purposes.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Darn, I knew I should have used “Billionaire_Playboy” instead of “Mr_Singleton”

She’s coming over for a period of time and will be basing herself with me but then (as I understand it) will go off to say Paris for a week then comeback and stay for a week before going somewhere else etc

It’s easier for her to have my address as her ‘place of residence’ for few months while she’s here. Things like buying things for delivery, mail address etc. As I’ve said she has a UK passport so there are no residency/work/Visa issues.

I assume that this visitor is an adult and can make up her own mind about this matter. Let her get on with it. It is unlikely that there will be any consequences for her. She will know if she is telling companies and organisations that your place is her main residence that it could rebound on her if checks are done. Giving or not giving your consent is irrelevant as for as I can see.

PS. I would encourage her to be up front and explain the situation as has been said.
