Metal marks on crockery

A while back I bought some of that cheap plain white crockery from Marks and Spencer - it's called "Andante".
It has gradually built up lots of what appear to be scratch marks, which I assumed to be a consequence of buying cheap.
However, some of the marks are quite broad and look like grey pencil marks. Also one bowl has small patches that are completely free of marks.
After a bit of hunting on the internet I found some suggestions that these are metal marks caused by crockery and can be removed by toothpaste. This only seems to fade the marks very slightly.
Has anyone found an effective way of getting rid of these unsightly marks?

try a scrub with a bit of cif, thats my answer to all stubborn stains if the trusty stardrops isnt up to the task
