What does Child Support cover?

Also remember that child support is not supposed to cover 50% of the bare minimum that it costs to bring a child up - although some people will not even get that much! It is supposed to acknowledge that a child has two parents and should expect a certain standard of living based on the income of both of them.

This is right and proper imo but also why the system will never be considered fair by a proportion of people. A PWC may choose to spend a proportion of her total income (including child support) on holidaying abroad or not working (which may or may not be for the benefit of the child but will probably be justified as the former by the PWC). The PwOC may find that these things are not affordable and so feel resentment and probably assume that the ex is just living a life of luxury off of the child support.

I can see the justification in both viewpoints and don't really see how child support will ever be an amicable agreement with all separated couples :(. Fair play to those who can make it so for the sake of the children.

  • I pay £450 a month which works out at 20% of my net salary. I have no objection to providing for and supporting my two children. One has to remember at this point that the resident parent also gets another £130+ per month child allowance in addition to maintenance payments. The thing that I really object to is the fact that I know full well that a large proportion of my money doesn't get spent on the children. At times I feel I am being taken advantage of.

My children stop with me every other weekend and usually turn up in what I consider to be rags. When I question their attire the answer I usually get is "Mum says she's run out of money". My ex-wife works and she also has her boyfriend (who also works full time) living with her so how she can't afford to have enough money left out of £580+ to buy a couple of cheap shirts and trousers is beyond me.

I once asked for a breakdown of where all the money for the children goes. The answer I received cannot be posted on this forum!
  • and it's often forgotten that the PWoC (NRP) has to run a house the same size as the PWC - just in case she deigns to allow the children to come and stay....:(

I buy all the unforms, shoes, coats etc due to my own conscience at not wanted my kids to look like the scruffs their mum is happy for them to look.
