many years ago I worked for a sensory profiling company. one of my last jobs with them was trialling baked beans. this involved tasting lots of baked beans! many moons after, we were informed that branston were releasing their very own brand of beans. I was converted, they were the best!! bought them ever since and recommended them too. however, I think they have changed their recipe, they are now awful!! thought it was just me being ott, but no, DH says the same. so this week I was sneaky, went into tesco bought 2 tins of their stockwell beans in the reduced section for 10p a pop. brilliant beans resumed once again!! proper price is 25p a tin, so better beans and at least half the price. win win!1

I agree that Branston beans aren't what they used to be. Loads more sauce and fewer beans in the tins IMO plus the price steadily increasing.
I've been buying Waitrose own brand at 4 for £1.10. they're not quite as good value as they sound ( because the tins are only 400g) but they taste good.
I don't go to Tesco often but when I do I'll give their beans a try.0 -
I've been buying Lidl's own brand recently as we have also gone off the Branston ones. Not keen on the Tesco ones, which is unfortunate as Tesco is my nearest SM.

Same here with the W/rose ones, and a higher percentage of beans versus liquid
I've tried the Lild ones, but more sugar % & less bean % means I'll stick with W/rose for the time beingEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I must be in the minority as I am really not fussy about my beans!
I normally get what is is the cheapest at the timeI don't like a lot of sauce which you tend to get more of in the cheaper versions, but that is easy resolved by just not using it all and draining some off.
Sometimes I add a bit of tomato puree and chill flakes to my cheap beans to spice them up at bit.0 -
Might have a can of Heinz 2 or 3 times a year but homemade baked beans are just so vastly superior that I limit myself to those usually.0

We used to buy Heinz beans, but found they were sometimes overcooked and mushy. Now we get Tesco own brand ones, think they are 32p. Much nicer than heinz and half the price.0

I don't get the British obsession with baked beans. It started out as the cheapest of the cheap food and a store-cupboard must for that reason, and now its more expensive it seems people actually like the product for its taste.
If you're going to eat a pulse, why not a chickpea or a kidney bean? :think:Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Chickpea on toast somehow just isn't the same. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I find a lot of the brands are far too sweet for my taste so for years now I've been "doctoring" the smartprice or basics ones - adding a small knob of butter, a couple of sploshes of L&P and a few twists of black pepper.Jan - May Grocery spends = £432.47
Jun - Grocery spends = £0 -
Comparing the ingredients on the Branston website to the older can in front of me the beans (51%) and tomato (38%) content are unchanged. Branston seem to have reduced the sugar, switched from table salt to reduced sodium sea salt and added spirit vinegar.
I also just noticed that Branston baked beans are no longer marketed as a "Which? Best Buy" but instead as "Good Housekeeping Institute approved." It does not look like Which? have tested baked beans since 2010 so chances are several of the brands tested have been reformulated since.
Results in 2010 were
73% Branston Baked Beans (63p)
72% Aldi Corale Baked Beans (29p)
72% Asda Baked Beans (44p)
71% Morrisons Baked Beans (44p)
70% Heinz Beanz (64p)
70% Morrisons Value Baked Beans (29p)
70% Tesco Baked Beans (44p)
69% Sainsbury’s Baked Beans (48p)
68% Lidl Campo Largo Baked Beans (29p)
66% Sainsbury’s Basics Baked Beans (29p)
63% Tesco Value Baked Beans (29p)
60% Asda Smart Price Baked Beans (29p)
