Twitter question

It's about when a comp asks you to, "retweet this post with the hashtag..." or retweet including a comment. I'm never sure if they want one retweet with the comment, or a retweet plus a comment on the thread?

The reason I'm unsure is, when you retweet, the option to retweet again disappears, but when you retweet with a comment, it still gives you the option to retweet, which makes me wonder if what I did originally counts as a retweet - does that make sense?

Thanks

when you click retweet a box comes up and above the post you are retweeting is a box for you to comment in. Put the hashtag or whatever they ask for in their and then click the full retweet. I know lots reply with the hashtag but that isn't what they're asking for. I always do both so have both bases covered. Just remember if they wanted you to reply with the hashtag they would say 'reply with hashtag'. If they say 'retweet with hashtag' you do what i've said above. Even worse is when lots of people copy paste a tweet and then reply to the people running the comp with that. That isn't a retweet and they won't be entered.

Thank you Serenity, soooooo much for that. I've been wrestling with this one for so long, it's embarrassing. What you said makes perfect sense.

Serenity, can I borrow the brain once more? So I went back to do what you said, but when I do that, it's offering me the option to "Quote Tweet" not retweet. Or are they the same thing? With the little comment box, I can't see anywhere that then gives an option to "retweet". At the bottom of the box is a "tweet button" not a retweet one.

    Thanks again

I'm answering my own question, just in case it's useful to anyone else.

When Googling this, I found: "Retweet is when you share a tweet from another person to your followers, while in “quote tweet” (which is actually retweet with a comment) you can add your own comments to your followers."

So I am going to do what serenity said above, and assume that by "quote tweeting," I am "retweeting", with an added comment.

    Thanks again

Just to add to the confusion (well, my confusion anyway!).......I think sometimes, with some of the more ambiguous sounding requests, that even the person/company doesn't entirely understand what they are asking for either and you can tell by looking at the eventual winners entries (when there has been more than one winner for a comp), that they have ended up accepting various methods as valid entries anyway, because all the announced winners entered in a slightly different way! :D

I saw one recently that asked you to “Retweet with comment and tag your friends” and many entrants had interpreted that differently. Among the multiple chosen winners were retweet with comment (quote tweet) with the comment including the tagged friends in addition to text “I’d love to win!” (which is the type of thing I would have thought the company was asking for), but there was also retweet with comment where they had commented but then added a separate reply with the tagged friends in, then another with retweet with comment where the comment was just the tagged friends (no additional comment in terms of text), then there was the usual type of retweet with a separate reply that included their comment and tagged friends (which seemed to be the most frequently used way of entering by most people), so in the end it appeared the company didn’t really mind how you entered! :)

I am really confused now, you see so many asking to retweet but quote tweets not allowed, so is retweeting just clicking on the arrows that make a square ?

Apologies Minnibix. I'm hoping that someone who truly gets it will reply and answer your question. I'm not that confident, but for what it is worth, here is what I think. Retweeting is easy because the button actually comes up with the word "retweet" on it, if you rest the mouse pointer on it. As for quoted tweets, that seems to apply where we retweet and comment at the same time. Which makes sense if you think about it as it is like commenting with the tweet quoted. So where it says to retweet and not quote, if you don't comment at the same time as retweeting, my guess is that this will be what they want.

But it would be really great to have that confirmed or clarified by someone.

Yes, that's right :) The 2 methods are combined when using the website on a laptop/desktop, so it is not as clear of a distinction as it is when using twitter on a phone/tablet where the options are separated slightly.

Retweeting works a bit differently depending on how you are accessing twitter. It can be different on the app to on the website, but also different depending on whether you access the website via a laptop or phone/tablet etc.

I can't cover all methods, but can explain what happens when I'm using it on my devices......

    Twitter website on laptop:

Select the retweet symbol (square made up of 2 arrows) and the tweet pops up separately giving the option to add a comment in the box above it......so write a comment before selecting "Tweet" (the word at bottom right changes from "retweet" to "tweet" as soon as you write a comment) and you're "Retweeting with comment" (which is sometimes referred to as a quote retweet), but if you don't write a comment and just select "Retweet" (the word at the bottom right) then that is a standard "Retweet" (the type that most comps ask for).

Twitter on phone/tablet using either the website or the twitter app:

Press the retweet symbol and 2 menu options pop up. Press the one that says "Retweet" and it will instantly just retweet it (the type most comps ask for), whereas press the other one that says "Retweet with comment" and the tweet will load with a section at the top of the tweet that says "Add a comment" where you can write a comment before pressing "tweet" (changes from "retweet" as soon as you write a comment) to retweet with comment (sometimes called a quote tweet).

It may vary on other phones/tablets, but that's how it works on mine.

I think the 2 options are probably a little clearer on the app or when accessing the website through a phone/tablet, because it actually asks you to chose between options labelled as a retweet and a retweet with comment, whereas if you always use twitter through the website on a laptop/desktop browser then the 2 methods look combined and aren't labelled with a name as such, so it's not as clear.

I have no idea if I have explained that well enough to make any sense to anyone except me, sorry! :rotfl:
