Barclays Basic with Barclaycard?

Both my husband and I are looking at BR soon. We both have maxed out Barclaycards that we are not currently able to pay the minimum payments on so they would be included in the BR.

My question is - as Barclays Basic Current Acc seems the best route for a post-BR account, will there be any issue with having the Barclaycard debt?

I don't want them to decide to take any income directly out of the account to pay the Barclaycard or anything? Hubby has already opened his Barclays Basic acc and his Barclaycard account has popped up on his Barclays app alongside it.

Thanks

When you go BR the Barclaycard debt is effectively wiped, so Barclaycard wont/can't take money from the Barclays account.

However Barclays could decide to close your account because of this, or just because. They did to me despite having no debt with them, just closed it after receiving the ORs letter. Annoying as I too thought Barclays was the place to be!

Anyway, could well be easier to just open a basic account elsewhere, Nationwide are often recommended & who I went to after barclays hissy fit.

As Annie35 says, it would illegal for them to take money from you to repay a debt after you are BR.
Just a few years ago, only Barclays and the Co-op would have BR's for bank accounts and that is reflected in the Welcome posts at the top of this board (they do need updating now I'm afraid).
Nowadays there is more choice. Nationwide would be my tip - their flex direct (make sure you select zero overdraft on the application) or their flex-basic are great accounts.
Was there a reason you particularly wanted Barclays?

Its worth noting that from other providers, posts on here still suggest that for most people, Santander are not BR tolerant so perhaps worth avoiding them.

If you do go with Barclays, their basic account is only available in person at a branch, they don't appear to offer the basic account online.

Barclays for me was available online, but only once you had failed the credit check for a normal account

Yep TheGardener, looking at Santander letter now saying it's policy for current accounts to be closed to undischarged br but they'll happy do a savings account!
