Unexpected bill

I have an unexpected bill to pay and I don’t where to start. Increase my overdraft? Try and take out a loan? Try applying for credit card? Which is the best thing for me to do when it comes to cost? The bill is almost £4000. Any advice welcome!

    Cut costs.
    Earn more.
    Negotiate a deferred payment.
    Use savings.
    Supply more details.

You are right - It is a large amount for an unexpected bill but I didn’t expect my Mum to die suddenly and unexpectedly in early hours of morning after her 61st birthday and I certainly didn’t expect to be left to deal with the almost £4000 undertakers bill on my own x

    Sorry to hear that.

Can they not arrange a payment plan?

Is there no form of help for things like this?

    Is there an estate?
  • Sorry for your loss. If there's money in the estate then the bank of the deceased should release funds to pay for the funeral costs.

There’s no money in the estate unfortunately. She was in social
Housing in receipt of benefits with her boyfriend. I have found after she died that her bank account was empty and had been for some time as all the money was going into his bank account not hers. He has not done any of the organising or sorting other than to ring the Morning after she died to have her name Removed from The tenancy and to check that he would still receive his money as normal!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Would you be able to get a 0% interest credit card? Does the undertaker use credit cards? That would be my first call, then the bank you use. Then loans, try online. The interest shown will very likely not be the one you get but you may get money that way.

Speak with undertakers... my mother passed away in similar circumstances last year, they were more than happy to accept a payment plan... in fact it was they who suggested it (I pay no interest and finish paying it next month).

A credit card with 0% on new purchases or money transfers is the cheapest option. Next is a loan but over £7500 as the interest rates plummet compared to below £7500. You can then repay the spare money as a lump sum.

As above though, most undertakers will allow a repayment plan. It'll be £100s a month they'll want though, not £50 just to forewarn you.
