SIPP Tax Relief Query

Hi

I have had a SIPP for quite a few years and each year I have found it fairly simple to claim tax relief from HMRC by either on the phone or through the webchat.

This year I already had £10K invested in a SIPP and had £5k in my account topped up my SIPP with this. Transaction went through fine.

I contacted HMRC to correct my tax code and now the advisers in asking for evidence.....and a letter to be sent to them with all the evidence.....grrr….

I know a lot of people use SA to do this. But anyone had experience of having to write to them and what evidence ?

I am worried now the time it will take to get any benefit in the tax as its the 1st March. My last pay date for this year is the 15th March so the code wont get changed in time.....

Thanks

HMRC reserve the right to ask for evidence. You may have just been a random sample check or maybe you moved up their risk list and they decided to run a check.

  • Someone who recently contacted HMRC about pension tax relief has posted a very comprehensive explanation of the process they had to go through on the Cutting Tax Board. £10,000 was mentioned in that although it wasn't clear exactly why.

If it is too late for you to get tax relief through your tax code then HMRC will do a calculation of your total liability for 2018:19 after the end of the tax year and refund you any tax overpaid direct.

Your tax code for 2019:20 wouldn't be changed to allow any pension tax relief due for 2018:19 but they may change your 2019:20 tax code on the assumption that you will pay a similar amount in 2019:20 as you did in 2018:19. So if this isn't going to be the case you might want to supply them with an estimate for 2019:20 so you don't end up owing tax for that year.
