...we got ours "free" using one of the solicitors that participates in the "free wills month" which normally take place around October. NB Our will is very simple, and we will be leaving a proportion to various charities.

It was all very simple to complete.

My wife and I need to write wills. Very very simple. She gets everything, I get everything, kids go to Aunt and Uncle.

If you both die simultaneously what happens? Assuming the kids are under 18 they can't inherit directly so a Trust would have to be set up.

If Aunt and Uncle also die what happens? Or they get divorced?

Having dependent children is definately a strong indicator for getting a Will written by a competent solicitor.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • I've written my and my wife's wills a couple of times now. Circumstances change as you get older and if you write your own will you can be more 'nimble' with updates as required as they don't cost anything and involve minimal hassle. Just research a bit online, UK sites, and you should have no problems. get it witnessed by two people who aren't going to benefit from the will. Job done for another few years.

Do it properly and see a solicitor.

Remember the case of "all to mother"? But the farmer's wife (known to all as "mother") and his own mother were still alive when he fell off the twig....

If you don't do it correctly and everything goes pear shaped, the cost of legal advice for your executor (paid for from your estate) could far exceed the cost of a properly drawn will.

    Is £50 to charity 'pricey'?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

OP are you a member of a trade union? Some do a free will writing service.

..originally we spoke to our solicitor and they advised that if the will was "simple" it is cheaper to go the "DIY" route and then get them (the solicitor) to "check it over"....

We found a retired solicitor who drafted both our wills for £150. We collected them from his house and his wife witnessed them.

Glad we did. Well worth the money.
