"Duty & Tax Invoice" on a return from USA repaired item

Options
Evening,

We went to USA a couple years ago and bought a pair of earrings. A couple weeks ago they broke a bit, and we sent them back for repair. We have just had a "Duty & Tax Invoice" from Fedex for £30.

Since it wasn't a purchase but a repair, I assumed we wouldn't have been charged (oops). Is there a way we can pay and then claim back from HMRC? Had a look at their site, but seems a bit complicated...

As it was from a few years ago, we no longer have receipts, proof of VAT already paid, etc.

Thanks!

A lot will depend on your paperwork. When you sent them to the US, you would presumably have done a commercial invoice stating it was parts going for repair and not a permanent export? If so, you can show Fedex that it was a repair and provide the shipping details and they can then remove the duty.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
