Every time I read a comment from John G. Jones I am grateful he doesn't work for the OR. I get a mental picture of an old-style headmaster in a mortar board flexing a cane behind his back.

Your wife's bankruptcy remains a matter of several public records. While it won't impact on her ability to actually get a mortgage, lenders will likely see her as a much greater risk and so not offer the best rates.

However, they can refuse to lend to any individual, so it's probably unwise of you both to approach a lender who is also a former creditor of her bankruptcy.

As above though, you won't know unless you try.

I was made BR in 2009 and have been accepted for a Mortgage at the best rates. The mortgage provider couldn’t have cared less.

That’s not really very kind, but given the difference in our situations I’ll not respond in kind, you must not be in a good mental place, and It’s far enough from reality that it’s just a bit amusing.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to be in your position at the age when most people are starting to enjoy the fruits of their working years so will just wish you the best of luck.

To be honest I'm not too bothered about your views of my own situation as I have a strong marriage and great family, but many of the people who post to this forum, and probably others who only read it, are very vulnerable and come here looking for advice rather than criticism. Some of your comments are very disparaging and sneering - see above- which could definitely be very poorly received by someone who is struggling to make ends meet. There can be many reasons people find themselves in difficulty such as ill health or relationship breakdown and not because of their own profligacy or incompetence. Please bear this in mind when you use words such as cheat to describe someone you have never met.

Natwest supposedly have a policy that they don’t give accounts to people who’ve defaulted in the past, even if it was subsequently paid in full. I was told that even if one did slip through the net, it would be a basic account only.
I was told this ten years ago and just this week I successfully opened a Reward account complete with offline debit card! (Something I’ve not had in many years) i might add the account defaulted due to their mistake and was settled in full- by them but was told the marker would still stand.

Just for a bit of light relief ...someone who has been bankrupt 4 times

Granted he had to go to Russian banks for credit/loans but that is another story.
Unlike some here, I am not omniscient. If I am wrong correct me. I won't take offence.

Of course, the big cheeses of this world use each and every loophole they can in order to lose as little money as possible, everyone knows it, yet the poor man on an internet forum gets grief for asking a question.....sad men in brown coats all.

And talking of cheese, anyone else see any, lets call them, similarities to the attitude shown to people on these forums, who for whatever reasons are down on their luck, between these two lovely people :
I can’t and won’t employ bankrupts but that is for sensible reasons. Going bankrupt is not a neutral act, people tend to have had to take liberties with others money. It is a serious road to go down, and says some very serious things about the person to whom it happens.

    and....
They borrowed money which they did not pay on time and in full. I’ve no real interest in the semantics of how you’d prefer to describe that but the fact remains no-one’s going to insist that a company that list out from lending to you before should have to do it again.

I feel they are one and the same, there cannot be two people with such large chips on their shoulders, eh farmer john ;)

Good shout, Windbag. That was who I was thinking of when I read it too, but couldn't remember the name.
