Insurance on mortgage

Hi. I am new here so not sure how this works. My question is that when I got divorced in 1994 I took over the mortgage on the family home in my name only. I was told I had to have insurance on the loan and the company the bank pointed me towards was Guardian Finance. Was this something I should have tried to claim back or doesn't it count as it was with another company and not the bank?

What makes you think you can claim it back?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. I'm guessing it's mortgage guarantee insurance, in which case nothing inherently wrong about being sold it as it was almost certainly a compulsory charge to get that mortgage (usually associated with higher loan to value percentages or other riskier types of case).0
