Barclays bank account when owing Barclaycard

Hi, My partner has been talking to National debtline, and was wondering if she opens a Barclays basic account before going bankrupt , then would barclays take money from her bank account to pay the card as she is way , way behind with paying them.
Thanks

  • I was advised against continuing with a bank account with one of my creditors. One of my creditors was HSBC, so I opened a Cashminder account with Co-Op before going bankrupt and closed all HSBC accounts.
  • so if she was to open a barclays one it would be best to wait until she actually goes bankrupt.
  • Hi, Many years ago Barclays took money from my bank account to pay my card.

There is a name for doing this but cant think what it is called.

Not sure if that still happens, for me it was in 2009.

If you owe Barclays money - don't open a basic account with them until after BR. If you need one before - try the Nationwide one.

I opened a basic account with Co-op just before I filed for bankruptcy. That was the forum advice back then (2009). After discharge I opened an account with Barclays.

If she has a debt with 1 company, they may close down all accounts held, just because.

I'm not sure Barclays are the no1 BR friendly bank now anyway* & it may just be easier to go with a fresh place & cut ties, Nationwide I've seen mentioned for instance.

*Barclays have just closed my basic account. I opened it after submitting br but before OR interview, so OR wrote to them aswell as my current account & they frizzed out & closed it. If she's set on a Barclays account I'd suggest opening after the OR interview then they won't write to Barclays & upset them :D

I can definitely recommend Nationwide. I have an account with them opened before BR but, maybe because I had no debts with them, they just changed the account to basic. The OR sent a letter saying they had no interest in the account and it wasn't frozen or anything. My husband had opened an account with Santander on the suggestion of National Debtline but they just closed it after his BR and wouldn't downgrade it to basic for some reason so he now also has a Nationwide account.

I had Nationwide Flexplus account along their select Credit Card before BR, after one month they closed my credit card but kept active the bank account inc same sort card and account number by downgrading to Basic Account. Like others say Nationwide very friendly for BR. Even, my OR recommended Nationwide in her official email as no.1 bank for bankrupt people.
  • I have also had Barclays do that "setting off" things to me a long time ago. My basic account is with co-op.
