  • Use Skype.

You can do this either using a PC, tablet or mobile. Just need to install the app at both ends and then set-up an account.

    It is free to use.

The other option would be whatsapp as it allows internet phone calls.

  • You're doing really well with this - well done!

I agree with Enthusiasticsaver that changing to an interest only mortgage deal is probably not right for you currently - the risk is that you have "form" for losing track of your finances and not really budgeting, and while at the moment there is a lightbulb burning brightly about dealing with this, I'd suggest that a lot more timed needs to pass before you can reasonably see yourselves as being routinely 100% savvy with your cash. With that in mind it would be very easy to get to the end of debt busting, decide to relax a bit on where the money is going and simultaneously forget to sort the mortgage out - and that could lead to you finding in 20 years time that you still have a LOT of mortgage to shift and insufficient cash set aside to do so.

Agree that WhatsApp & Skype may be worth a look for phone calls for your wife, and most impressed with your answer on the mobile phone thing!

On the contract that is ending in June, if I were you I'd call the provider in early April with details of a competitor's very keen SIM only deal that you're planning on bailing to - and ask them if they can match. There is a reasonable chance that they may left you do it there and then, saving the final couple of months on the contract while also matching the SIM only deal. EE let me slide to a (then) £11 a month SIM only deal three months early - I'm still happily on it, and it's actually a heavily discounted standard deal.
