Things have to change...

Hello all

I've been a lurker on MSE for years but i'm finally plucking up the courage to start my own diary.

I'm 38, working part-time and raising my two daughters aged 13 and 2.5 by myself. Life is a hectic juggling act and this combined with my natural disorganised nature means that I've struggled to keep on top of finances.

On paper I have a fairly decent income but I also have a lot of high outgoings and lots of little debts that I need to clear. I'm pretty rubbish about sticking to my budget and as a result direct debits have been missed in the past through sheer disorganisation.

With 40 fast approaching i've decided that now is the time to get on top of everything and fix the disaster that is my credit rating :(.

I have income coming in twice per month and my aim for the next month is to make sure I get current on all my bills. It will be tight as i've also had to make a final payment towards my eldest daughter's school trip which is at the end of April as well as paying some double payments to get current on my bills. It's doable though. Just

One of my biggest outgoings is nursery fees. Fortunately my daughter gets her 3 year funding in September and that will be a massive help. 6 more payments and counting!!

It also doesn't help that I have no savings at all. I used them all up to keep us afloat while I was on maternity leave with my youngest. Since then i've not been able to build my savings back up again although it would have been possible if i'd only stuck to a budget and planned a bit better. The lack of savings was the kick up the bum I needed as last week my car needed some repairs. As my savings are non existent I had to put it on my credit card which is now maxed out. Things HAVE to change.

I need to update my signature and add all my debts later on. Quite a few will be cleared within the next 12 months as long as I stay organised and stick to my budget.

Hopefully posting on here will keep me accountable.

The first thing i would do is an Soa, if you google it there are templates out there. Re savings i would not be concerned regarding savings just yet, are you up to date with everything on the priority bills front ie rent/council tax/mortgage etc etc??

An emergency savings you can build up gradually.
