Fantastic HMRC data

Literally fantastic.

My Personal Tax Account is being populated with complete nonsense.

For instance it tells me that "Your total income from private pension is estimated to be £X this tax year." (Note the Nigerian spammer grammar).

Later it informs me that "Tax on other income not collected through your tax code : -£Y."

I don't have a private pension. I have an occupational pension but it is nothing like £X. Indeed I have never had an income of £X - even in toto.

Similarly I do have taxable savings interest income - but I wasn't expecting it to justify a £Y rebate. How could tax on interest paid gross be negative?

I asked HMRC about this. They asked if I'd recently received any lump sums etc. No. They couldn't explain it.

Anyone else getting such, literally fantastic, nonsense thrown at them?

Could this be an identity theft case? Or someone who accidentally used your NI number?

Yep. We use software that imports the HMRC data into our clients' tax returns. We've disabled it as half the time it was importing complete garbage. We had one showing state pension for some in their 30's and another showing wages from an employer the client had never heard of. Ridiculous.

I suspect that in the dysfunctional world of HMRC one doesn't need to look for criminal conspiracy - just good old-fashioned incompetence. The valid pension figures - state and occupational - are definitiely mine. The "other income" is not too unreasonable, given that the figure is still provisional.

Numerically, the bizarre rebate on the tax on the other income is very similar to the tax on on my real pensions less the tax on my mythical private pension - but who knows?

You couldn't make it up - but they do. :)

My Personal Tax Account had many entries for untaxed interest that I couldn't understand and some items missing. I rang them and they deleted their entries and took my figures (though it took 2 phone calls as wasn't done correctly first time).
I haven't spoken to them for years (no need) but totally alarmed by recent communications. A close watch and good record keeping is absolutely essential.

My occupational pension amounts are correct. Mind you, it is a civil service pension, so one would hope they can get that right at the very least. My PAYE income is also correct.

With regard to the "income from other sources", that only shows their/my estimate based on previous years. Do other people get to see where the interest comes from?
