    If you are looking for trans-fats (the nasty stuff in hydrogenated oils), you might have to do a little math when looking at the label. You'll tend to see a 'Total Fat Content' bit, and then (if you're lucky) the content for saturated, mono-unsaturated, and poly-unsaturated fats. If you add the saturated, mono, and poly contents together it should add up to the amount under 'Total Fat Content'. Any fat that is not accounted for is trans-fat.

    Um, was that clear at all? :confused:

    Some food labels show the trans-fat content, but it's not very common.

    I believe Lard can also be beef. I've been looking out for an organic version & found a Welsh farm site that sold it online. Other than that, I don't intend to use lard generally, but when I did, a half lard, half butter mix made excellent pastry.

    Lard only comes from pigs. The fat from cows is 'beef dripping'.
  • Well I used lard all of my life and I'm still here. :D Probably if you are sensible, just make the mince pies and don't let on what you put in them. Men have no business to be interfering in a woman's domain,and my kitchen always was my domain.
    My late husband bless him not only used to eat and enjoy dripping toast, but he also had lard on brown bread with salt and pepper.In 40 odd years he never suffered from a cold, and never had a day off sick either. Apparently his Granny used to feed him and his little brother bread and dripping or lard when they were small as she swore that it kept the colds away. As she lived to 95 it worked for her.:D
    Bearing in mind that we rarely know what goes into our food nowadays I wouldn't worry too much. :rotfl: I am the wrong side of 60 and will continue to make my mince pies and pastry with half and half lard/ half marg or butter.
    None of my tribe would have the temerity to question what goes in it.If they did then it would be a case of if you want to do something different then do it yourself.;)

    Well said - a woman after my own heart!

    If they want to complain, then they can jolly well get into the kitchen and do it themselves - as long as they leave the kitchen as tidy as when they found it!!!!!
