Photo ID required

I was trying to apply for an HMRC job and got as far as the assessment day when they ask me to bring along a bundle of personal papers.

The part that really screwed me was the photo id. I do not and have never had any ID with a photo such as a passport, driving license or any of those on offer and getting a photo signed by a notable person would at the moment be not on.

I'm sure other none travelers and none drivers must have had this problem before, So I'm wondering what is the easiest way to do this without jumping through too many hoops?

  • I don't understand why you can't just get a photo and get it signed by someone. There are a very wide range of acceptable jobs, and surely it's better to turn up with a photo signed by someone with what HMRC subsequently deems an unacceptable job than not to turn up with a photo? Try the manager of your local supermarket, anyone who has known you for a few years with a reasonbly senior job....

Get a provisional licence. Alternatively don't get this (and frankly most) jobs

    No they don't.

I've been out of the country just once so hold a passport for ID issues you could say. It's helped with the ID process for employment more times then I'll ever have travelled.

Even my zero motivation to get a job friend has a provisional license for the photographic ID - was recently moaning that in addition a recruitment agency wanted to actually see their last payslip so I'm not sure there is a way round it.

I have lost a lot of patience for people like OP, because there's some strange reluctance to just do it....

It isn't explicit in OP's post, but if they ended up turning up to the interview without the required documents (and without a good reason like "my passport renewal has been delayed but here's the order confirmation email") then it probably generated a few chuckles/facepalms :D

I'm not going to provide direct links (because of the lack of patience as per above) but do one of the following:

    - Put in an order for a new passport
    - Put in an order for a new provisional driving licence
    - Put in an order for a new [insert other forms of acceptable photo ID]

I mirror the advice about the signed photo from others on here too.

EDIT: OP is 56!! How do you get through so much of your life without having a photographic form of ID?!

Very easily if the OP has never travelled abroad and either doesn't drive, or has the old style paper licences, of which there are still a surprisingly high number.

There is no requirement for any UK national to have any form of ID be that photo or otherwise, whether or not there should be is another matter, but I think the OP is going to have to make the effort to get some form of photo ID as requests for that are pretty common in the workplace now.

No statutory requirement. (nor should there be)

But this is simply a practical problem which the OP will struggle to overcome
  • I was going to say, it’s possible, my Nan & grandad are in their late 60s and have never held a driving license or provisional nor a passport.
