Mileage payment HMRC

Options
My employer pays less than the HMRC guideline of 45p per mile so in April will claim back difference directly from the tax office.
Will the amount owed be paid directly back to me or will it come back via increase in tax free allowance?

  • so in April will claim back difference directly from the tax office.

You cannot claim the difference from HMRC.

You can claim tax relief on the difference (on qualifying business mileage).

How are making your claim, Self Assessment return or P87?
  • Hi everyone, help required please, I drive my own car and have a business fuel card for which I deduct personal mileage each month back to the company, via expenses.

I am under the impression I can claim 34p on the first 10k as my employer charges fuel out at 11p and 24p thereafter

So if I do 35000 miles that would be £3400 and £3500 for the remainder = £6900 deduct 40% £2760 from this is that my claim £2760? or is it the residual amount e.g £4140 that I claim back?

Also I am right that I can do this claim?

    Thanks guys

You cannot claim mileage from HMRC (unless you work for them). You can potentially claim tax relief.

Where do you get 24p from?

Using your figures your "claim" is £6900. The tax relief due would be anything from £0 to (in unusual circumstances) £4.2k+. If you pay sufficient higher rate tax the tax relief could be £2,760.

If you are claiming expenses of £6,900 you will have to register for Self Assessment and file a tax return.

Impossible to say if such a claim is correct or not from the information provided.

Sorry for jumping in but hoping someone can clarify the mileage claim process. Due to my annual mileage I will have to file a self assessment. Can I login to the hmrc portal throughout the year and add weekly / monthly trips to submit at the end of tax year?
What info is required for the journey? Is from Aberdeen to Dundee 60 miles OK or does it have to include company name and postcode?
    Thanks

No. The tax return is only available to complete after the tax year ends.

Assuming you are referring to the Self Assessment return then nothing is required in respect of individual journeys. You need to keep your own records so that you can justify the claim if HMRC decide to investigate your return.

You enter the amount of expenses you are claiming for the tax year as a whole (for a particular employment).

Why not just take a look at form SA102 and the accompanying notes on gov.uk. Then you will know what you will have to completing. It might be for a different tax year but it is unlikely to be much different from one year to another (the bit you are interested in anyway).
