Competitions - where do you start?

Looking at starting to entering competitions as a hobby and with the hope of a little prize maybe. I have subscribed to competition time update forum and seen that today there are 164 new threads. My question is how do you work out what to enter/ monitor what you have entered and find the best competitions to enter? Looking for a bit of advice before I start. are the threads on there all new comps or they remain on there until after the closing date? Thanks in advance.
