I've done a couple of documenteries as an extra, though not been signed up to an agency.

The best bet is to go to an agency that specialises in work for extras. eg www.2020casting.com (these also do extras for movies).

Your OH must be prepared though to go at a moments notice, sometimes be only needed for one day, then not be needed for a long while. Some days they will need you there stood around waiting, only to be used for 5 mins!

On the other hand, could be needed everyday for months! and it's great to watch a TV (or movie...my mate was in Gladiator!) and point yourself out and go 'there's me... and I got paid for that!!'

Best of luck with it all

  • Hi there

I was an extra on various films and tv series for CastingCollective.co.uk and found them to be very fair. They sometimes have open castings on their website, especially if there is a big film coming up. They are looking for ugly 'interesting' people at the mo or people with missing teeth! I don't no if you want to admit that oh fits the bill!

The men are usually more in demand than girls as war films etc need lots of groups of men.

The work itself can be quite boring sitting around for long periods but as long as you know this and come prepared, good book etc it is fine. I always found everyone quite friendly especially on the crowd shoots.

It is good fun getting in costume and your earnings will boost up by, allowing them to cut or hair £25 or doing an extra, smoking a cig on cue, kissing or hugging someone, saying a line.

Generally you are quite well fed and there is usually tea and coffee on tap, and if we ever went over the designted number of hours before a meal, the cry would go up 'kerching, broken lunch!' - everyone got another £12.

The down sides the previous poster mentioned, early early starts and long periods of nothing.

    Good Luck!

I've done a few extras parts. I was in The Bill a few times when I lived in London and I'm an extra in a film. It isn't that greatly paid but you usually get free meals. For the film extra one we were filming from 11pm to 3am and it was like a party atmosphere while the filming was on and I had a great time.

there is a £12 membership so that u can have ur own profile and then apply for any jobs, worth a shot? I know a fee for agencies is expected and it looks quite professional too.

  • I live in Newcastle and have done quite a bit of extra work through a company called united casting. Not sure if it operates down south tho.

I found out about it thru an ad in the local paper, went along to sign up
and was offered work 2 weeks later. My fee was taken from my 1st days
    pay.

It was a great experience and met lots of nice people. The daily rate isn't bad and you get all your meals and drinks but the days can be long and boring.
  • This sounds interesting...I'll have to look into this. The boredom doesn't sound like anything a book cant fix.

No one has actually said what the daily/hourly rate is though !

  • I was paid £75 a day.

A couple of days I was there for 12 hours, other days I was there for 4-6 hours and one day I started at 6.30a.m - had breakfast, did one shot and was sent home just after 8a.m.

It's not going to make you rich but a couple of the other extras brought work with them - one was a proofreader, one wrote articles for newspapers and magazines and another made jewellery and handbags. All of these could be done between takes while working as an extra.

Plus the free food and drinks were suprisingly good!
