HELP - Security Vetting Question

Hello Money Savers - I hope there may be someone on here that could help, you see i'm in a bit of a predicament!

My Husband has just landed his dream job, a promotion within the Prison Service ... I am over the moon for him, he is now going through a higher level of security vetting than he previously needed.

Here's the problem, I was once married before, back in 1998, the marriage only lasted for a couple of years until the marriage went sour - my then husband was in a lot of debt and we took out a loan in my name, when the marriage ended I changed my name by deed pole back to my maiden name - I moved home and washed my hands of everything. I have never been contacted about the loan I assume because they couldn't find me. In 2002 I got a mortgage in my own name and have never looked back, I have no credit problems and a very healthy credit rating.

As a part of my now husbands vetting I have had to give my previous married name - I am absolutely terrified they may find this issue and refuse his vetting. It was a long time ago but I am not sure how far they delve into past relationships.

Has anyone any experience of this or could give me any advice. In all honesty I had forgotten about this loan because it was so long ago but it has now come to the front of my thoughts and i'm not sleeping because of it :(

The point of security vetting, in this case, is to see if your husband is liable to corruption - ie could pressure be bought to bare on him to "do favours" for prisoners (eg smuggle in goods etc).
From a financial point of view the question is is he/you in enough financial trouble that criminals could bribe him. From what you've said that doesn't seem to be the case from this 20 year old loan
  • Thanks for responding Andy I do hope you're right!
  • Yes, the loan is too old for them to chase now - expires after 7 years is my understanding.
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

The biggest issue on most vettings is when people try and lie or hide something, and that usually results in a fail. If you are honest, it can be surprising what can be allowed through.
