Hello I started a new job in December. I provided a P45 from an old employer that I left in 2017 as I was studying in between. In December my new work had a problem with their system so they stated they would pay me and make deductions manually but the only effect this would have would be me missing a pay slip.
I was paid £1,273.57
Fast forward January and I'm paid £1,231.17. obviously this is different from my pay in December so I look at my pay slip.
It started gross salary £1,458 which is correct
It then had a deduction of £1,273.57 which was my salary last month.
Then it had a retrospective adjustment of £1548- Which looks like a manual error as that isnt my salary.
I then had a tax figure of around 300.19. The NI was correct. This seems too high? My tax code was 1185 M1 if that helps. Can someone just explain how that figure has come about please.

The only people who can explain this with certainty are the payroll / HR people where you work.0

I have contacted them but all they've said is that they will contact their payroll partners and will get back to me. The 1548 has been confirmed as a mistake though. I'm just trying to see if anyone had any idea about the tax figure0

You would have been better not doing that. You could have simply completed a new starter declaration and been on the correct (cumulative) tax code from day 1. Assuming this was your first job since 6 April 2018.
What do you think is wrong with the £300 tax (for two months wages).0 -
Yeah my mistake. I should have completed the new starter form insteadDazed_and_confused wrote: »

I don't earn enough to have an income tax of £150 per month. I'll just wait it out. What ever happens happens0 -
Yes you do. Taxable income greater than £988/month will result in tax being deducted whilst the emergency tax code is in operation.
Note the emergency tax code is exactly the same tax code most people have but is used on a non cumulative basis so what you earned (or didn't earn!) earlier in the same tax year isn't taken into account.0 -
Can you give all the figures from your payslip including the headings for each figure?0

It stated gross salary £1,458 which is correct
It then had a deduction of £1,273.57 which was my net salary last month.
Then it had a retrospective adjustment of £1548. My work have stated that this figure is wrong and should be £1458.
I then had a tax figure of around 300.19. The NI £193 My tax code was 1185 M1
£1,231.17 as bank account transfer/take home pay0 -

Ah that makes sense I guess they just think I earned £3000 that month and it's been taxed that way. Ok that makes sense. Is there a way for me to come off the emergency code? Do I need to contact HMRC?0 -

Is there a gross to date figure and tax to date figure?
The tax and NI figure you give are they to date figures or for the month? If to date what are monthly figure, if monthly what are to date figures?0 -
This is my first payslip from this job as they didn't provide me one during my first month in December because of an error in their system. The NI and tax were to date and I guess for the month as well since it's my only payslip. The gross salary was for the month.0
