zurich adaptable pension plan

My father passed away a couple of years ago.
Him and my mother have not been together (separated but not divorced) for 28 years.
She has lived in ireland all this time and him in england. I too live in england and have done since 2005. Any assets belonged to my mother anyway when he passed away so thier was no will etc.
it has now transpired he had a zurich adaptable pension plan ( this was taken out in the 90's while he lived in England, may have been allied dunbar at the time).
Who will be classed as his next of kin? It's all very confusing...
Thanks

Who will be classed as his next of kin?

With pensions, the pension holder nominates and individual (or individuals) to receive the fund in the event of their death. If no expression of wish is given then the pension trustees decide who to pay it to based on the personal circumstances they are able to find out. Often referring to the Will to get an idea.

Did Zurich contact your mother about this?

What (if anything) was said about a statement of wishes? Or one was not completed?

Your mother will need to give the Trustees all the information they request - even a statement of wishes does not bind them but in practice they would be very unlikely not to be guided by it.

Otherwise they will come to a decision on the information provided.
