Breaking confidentiality

Hi so a friend of mine was suspended from work and they did have the right to sack her unfortunately luckily she handed in her notice before it went that far. Problem is people in the company knew she was getting suspended before she knew herself, isn't this breaking some sort of confidentiality? She's wondering now even if she has left could she still do something about this as she's still really upset about it.

Thanks

    Theoretically yes, realistically no!

Did they know ... or did they assume as they were party to the knowledge of what she'd done and so guessed that'd be the natural outcome?

Exactly this. There are many ways someone could know someone would be suspended, maybe because they know just how badly they had messed up (You appear to imply they are justified in terminating her which is why she left) and perhaps someone who did that previously was suspended.
They may have been asked to cover some work in the future and from that surmised that the person who normally completes that work would be no longer available. There may have been operational reasons why the people who knew, knew.

Unluckily for your friend her now former employer can truthfully supply a reference stating that she resigned whilst suspended pending an investigation for gross misconduct. Providing such a reference is far more likely if she starts making allegations against the company. She should move on and learn from her mistakes.
