Cavalo Nero - Black kale

This was delivered in veg box last Weds. Is it possible to freeze or does anyone know of any soup or other recipees to use it for. All meals planned for this week so have no immediate use and will not last much longer. Thanks.

  • The nicest thing we have done with it is shred it finely and stir fry it with onion, garlic and ginger in a wok till softened and then add a dash of soy sauce. Would this work as a veg with any of your other meals?

  • This is a fab veg, I grow it every year. Strip the green away from the white rib if its a bit tough. Smaller leaves are more tender. Use as you would spinach/cabbage ... esp.nice in bubble and squeak. I like it just steamed with a salad dressing/soy sauce etc. Lots more recipes on www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine
  • Heavenly! I first grew this 4 years ago and it's been a "must" ever since. Amazing taste .... far superior to any other kale or cabbage.

You can freeze it, but if you've not tried it before, use it fresh so you can fully appreciate it. You can simply use it in place of cabbage.

It's also excellent to add, shredded, to any soup - add it at the end so it doesn't go too soft. Although it holds its texture very well.

    Yum, yum!

p.s. if you grow it, have 2 or 3 plants to go through the winter and pick from alternative plants. It will go right through from Nov to March.

  • Do I need to blanch it before freezing or can it go straight in freezer as it is.
