Working abroad for 1 year and buying a house in the UK

Options
Hey,

My boyfriend and I would love to do year working abroad in somewhere like New Zealand or Australia. We are very fortunate that we have a £100,000 deposit for a house sitting and waiting for us to use.
My question is we are looking to buy end of this year beginning of next. If we decided to work abroad for a year. How quickly would we get a mortgage when we come back to the UK? Would a UK mortgage take into account the consistant work you did abroad or would we have to wait some time being in a a UK job?
Hope that all makes sense.

Thanks
Lucy

All lenders have their own requirements - a decent deposit will work in your favour, however you would probably need to be back and in jobs for around six months before trying (this is because most new jobs tend to have have six month probabtion period). Income from jobs overseas won’t make any difference as it will be the income you’re relying on to repay your mortgage that they will be interested in.
  • As above they would probably look for six months income from the UK before allowing the application
