Mortgages for defaults

Cut a long story short we have exchanged contracts and currently waiting to complete on our new build house purchased through HTB. As we have been delayed our mortgage offer has expired and therefore we are in the situation of either needing to ask for an extension or re-applying.
As my partner has had defaults on his credit file, we currently have a mortgage offer with Precise. However, since first applying for the mortgage (6 months ago), my partners credit file has considerably improved now only showing 4 defaults and no open balances compared with the original 9 defaults and 2 open balances
We are keen to get the best mortgage possible (as everyone is!) and therefore are considering trying to go to high street lenders in the hope of a lower interest rate. However, we don't know if with 4 defaults on the file if we will be immediately declined although I have very good credit with no defaults etc.
Does anyone know of any high street lenders who are more lenient when it comes to bad credit? We were previously declined by Skipton and Natwest but at that point my partners credit file was showing the 9 defaults and 2 open balances.
Thanks in advanced!!!
