What can happen if you don't work your notice?

Hi there, What can a company do if you hand your notice in and they say you have to work a 4 week notice but you don't work it. Obviously you wouldn't get any pay but can they take money from you? Could they write to you and say that you owe them money? I heard from a friend that a place of work could sue you for the money…
