Difference Govt. Gateway vs Gov.uk Verify or is it a scam

Ok here's the observation and Query.

I have been using Government gateway login to access all services I need, ie SE tax, National insurance/pension and Vat etc etc.

Time has come to renew my DBS or CRB, in the past I have used Disclosure Scotland for my Basic Disclosure certificate. ( FYI to work around children).

The only service that the GOV.uk do not allow you to add to gateway is DBS, so now it appears I have to use this NEW GOV.UK Verify to be able to login to not only DBS but I can access all my existing services that I currently use via Gateway.gov.,

However...........,

GOV.UK Verify is to be run by private companies and I am expected to take all my ID and present myself and give my data to a list of companies who as far as I know are not just fly by night but scammers as well.

When I am logged into my services through gateway.gov there is no mention of this apparently new super secure system centralised system to gain access to all my private personal data.

Are the government afraid that gateway.gov is insecure and out of date? why have I not been written to by the government to be told they are farming out my ID to private companies.

Any thoughts anyone....

Cheers

It does not explicitly involve cutting tax, but it is related to tax and the system, I note you are a fervent user of this site, could you help me by suggesting where would be the best place to post this topic,

The Government Gateway service launched in 2001 - its now very old and is due to be decommissioned this year (by March 2019).

Services are moving to other platforms such as Verify which was launched in 2016 as a replacement .

You can choose who you use to verify your identity including..the Post Office, Barclays and Experian. While Verify uses 3rd parties like credit reference agencies to verify your identity (just like banks do) the underlying services are still done by government departments.

HMRC are also developing a new 'gateway' service which some other departments may also use if they don't want to use Verify.

Thankyou very much for the links and the comment above. This would explain why HRMC have not made me aware of any significant update to the current back end security they use.

I was forced to use "GOV.UK Verify" to obtain my DBS. I could not find another way in. unfortunately disclosure Scotland failed me despite all my previous CRB/DBS certificates having been issued by them.

As to GOV.UK Verify what a complete waste of time as

having being forced to register with them (my choice through the post office)to gain access, I simply had to enter exactly the same ID data and security to apply for a new certificate.

So here we have it.... another company obtaining all my ID data (that I have a duty to protect) and then offering surprisingly an app to put on my phone to make my life really easy apparently, however I view this as yet another potential area at risk of breach. I obviously declined the kind offer of an ID app on my smart phone. However I accept I have had to add another two very weak areas in my well worn tin hat.

I certainly will never use GOV.UK Verify to access my VAT or any other HMRC service DVLA etc

This I hope will cut my potential tax bill by having anyone else altering my accounts,

    cheers

Of course I could open a GOV.UK verify account for each service I use and then be able to identify where any breach came from...... if I was that inclined
